Friends With Diabetes - UK
When Type 1 Diabetes touches your life, it changes everything.
But, do not worry! At Friends With Diabetes (FWD), you have a supportive
community ready to walk this journey with you. You are never alone!
For families in the Orthodox and Charedi Jewish communities, hearing that a child, a teenager, or a loved one has been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes can bring a wave of fear and uncertainty. It is not just the medical facts that weigh heavily. It is the sudden changes, the daily challenges, and the emotional struggle of facing something unfamiliar, all while living within a deeply rooted religious lifestyle.
We understand these issues because we come from the same community. We know the questions that keep you up at night—how to observe the Sabbath and religious holidays safely, how to follow dietary laws, navigate school policies, celebrate Simchas, and find trustworthy information when internet access is limited. We know how lonely it can feel when the support around you does not truly understand your values, your way of life, or the unique needs of your family.
That is why we are here.
FWD is more than just a source of medical information. We are a community built on compassion, understanding, and respect for your culture and experience. We stand beside children, young people, and families living with Type 1 diabetes, offering not only guidance but also a place where you belong.
Through regular gatherings, support groups, and activity days, we create spaces filled with warmth and acceptance—places where children can make friends who truly get what they’re going through, where they can grow in confidence and simply be themselves. We understand how overwhelming it can feel for parents and guardians—because we’ve seen it firsthand, and we’re here to help every step of the way.
We also work hand in hand with schools, healthcare providers, community rabbis, and educators to ensure that every child receives care and education that honors their beliefs and lifestyle. Whether by advocating for better support in schools or creating resources designed for our community, our mission is to help every family feel seen, heard, and supported—at home, at school, and beyond.
FWD is not just a support network.
We are a lifeline. A bridge between the medical and the meaningful. A source of hope and strength. We are here to help families live with diabetes with courage, confidence, and dignity.
“We are truly grateful you found us.”

One Strong Start at a Time
The first year after a diabetes diagnosis can feel like stepping into the unknown.
New routines, unfamiliar terms, and constant decisions can be overwhelming—for both individuals and families. That’s why FWD provides early-stage support to help ease this transition and bring clarity to a confusing time.
From meal planning and glucose monitoring to emotional reassurance and practical, day-to-day guidance, our team is here to walk beside you. Support is always personalised—whether you’re a parent learning to care for your child, or an adult adjusting to a new diagnosis yourself.
To date, 78 people have been supported through their first year of living with diabetes—and each one has moved forward not just with knowledge, but with real human connection.
Countless Moments of Confidence
From swimming and crafts to cycling and storytelling, our events are carefully planned with medical awareness in mind. Moreover, children can participate freely without feeling “different” or held back. So far, over 150 children have taken part in these days—and each one leaves with more than memories. They leave with confidence, friendships, and a brighter view of what’s possible.
