Founder and Trustee/Director

Mr Yoshua Hochhauser

Yoshua Hochhauser founded Friends With Diabetes (FWD) with a clear and heartfelt mission: to ensure that no individual or family faces the challenges of diabetes alone. With deep roots in the community and a strong understanding of its unique needs, he has been central in shaping FWD’s hands-on, culturally sensitive approach to support.
Having witnessed firsthand the emotional and practical struggles families face after diagnosis, Yoshua committed himself to creating a space where empathy meets action. He works closely with healthcare professionals, educators, and community leaders to ensure people living with diabetes receive the care, guidance, and dignity they deserve.
His work goes far beyond the boardroom. Whether it’s arranging activity days for children, championing accessible information in schools, or helping navigate care pathways, Yoshua remains a driving force behind every initiative. His tireless dedication continues to strengthen FWD’s mission of inclusion, empowerment, and better outcomes for all.

Co-founder and Trustee/Director

Mrs Deborah Margulies

As Co-founder of Friends With Diabetes (FWD), Deborah Margulies has been a vital force in building and growing the charity from its earliest days. Her deep compassion and unwavering belief in empowering individuals and families have helped shape the inclusive, person-first values that define FWD today.
Deborah brings not only professional expertise but also a personal understanding of the impact diabetes can have—especially in close-knit communities where stigma and confusion often create barriers to care. Her guidance has been instrumental in expanding FWD’s outreach to underserved families, ensuring that both children and adults feel heard, supported, and seen.
Beyond her strategic leadership, Deborah actively champions school awareness programs, culturally appropriate resources, and initiatives that support everyday life with diabetes. Whether helping to design community activity days or collaborating with educators to foster diabetes-friendly environments, she remains deeply involved in the details that matter most.
Her commitment is driven by a powerful vision: a world where living with diabetes doesn’t mean facing it alone. Through Deborah’s dedication and insight, FWD continues to provide that vital lifeline—day in, day out.

Trustee/Director

Mr Mendel Braun

Mendel Braun was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of 20, giving him a firsthand understanding of the daily realities faced by people living with the condition. He knows what it takes to manage blood sugar levels, adjust routines, and handle the emotional challenges that come with diabetes. He also knows how challenging it is especially for young people navigating adult responsibilities.
A highly respected registered childminder with years of hands-on experience supporting children with varying needs, Mendel has always been passionate about creating safe, supportive environments for those who may otherwise feel overlooked. His work has given him deep insight into how diabetes impacts children and families on a practical and emotional level, especially within close-knit communities where awareness can be limited and stigma remains.
Mendel joined FWD not just as a trustee, but as a voice for those who may struggle in silence. His goal is to help break down barriers and expand access to culturally appropriate care, clear information, and emotional support. He’s especially focused on outreach to schools, ensuring educators are empowered to support students living with diabetes and helping children feel included—not defined—by their condition.
Driven by his own journey and a genuine love for community work, Mendel plays a key role in guiding the charity’s vision of helping every individual feel equipped, informed, and supported from day one.
